The GLS Inspires Me to Advocate for Vulnerable Youth

The GLS Inspires Me to Advocate For Vulnerable Youth - Tori Petersen

The Global Leadership Summit reminded me that God gave me a story to tell, and that not telling it would be a waste. Since 2019 I’ve been privileged to be a part of Danielle Strickland and Krish Kandiah’s ministries. Both of these leaders were speakers during the first GLS I attended.

GLS19 offers fresh, actionable and inspiring leadership content from a world-class faculty.

Together we have advocated for vulnerable youth and foster youth. And since I was once in the foster care system myself, I’ve spoken at different events since The Global Leadership Summit 2019. The most powerful speaking engagement that meant the most to me occurred in the juvenile detention center I once resided in myself. It was a small get together, but I could see God working—the kids asked questions and it felt like many of them came to these “aha” moments that their lives didn’t have to end up where they were at and I have The Global Leadership Summit to thank for that.

I’m a Trafficking Survivor & You Impacted My Life

Girl smiling with tattoos

Rebecca BenderYou likely do not know me, and we may never meet, but I’m writing to you because you need to know that if you have been a part of the Global Leadership Network community, you have had an impact on my life. And if you’ve ever given a donation above and beyond the registration cost to attend The Global Leadership Summit, you continue to have an impact on my life and the lives of those who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to receive the level of leadership training and encouragement the Summit provides.

…I knew how hard it was to find your footing after escape.

My name is Rebecca Bender, and I’m a sex trafficking survivor.

When I was offered a ticket to attend the Summit for the first time in 2014, I had already felt called by God to serve other survivors because I knew how hard it was to find your footing after escape. I knew I wanted to help survivors unearth their purpose and worth, giving them opportunities to go after who they truly were created to be. But I’ll be honest, at the time, what I lacked was an understanding of true leadership. I knew I could share a good story, but I didn’t know how to be a good leader.

As I sat there at my first Summit, I was just floored by what I heard.

Don Flow quoteI remember being totally inspired by a speaker named Don Flow, a car dealer from North Carolina. With inspiration from his talk on how he intentionally invested in his team, I wrote a manifesto for how I wanted to lead the team God was entrusting me with at my newly formed non-profit: Elevate Academy.

Leadership changes everything.

I’ve had mentors, bosses and pastors in my life. But the Summit exposed me to things I’d never been taught or shown. It gave me tools to expand my leadership and to develop my non-profit with Kingdom principles in mind. I not only became a better leader but a bolder leader—a leader who learned how to have crucial conversations and “lead through the dip” with “a pace of grace”. The Summit gave me the practical leadership tools I needed to make my vision a reality. It’s one thing to dream. It’s another to be able to lead people in the fight.

It’s one thing to dream. It’s another to be able to lead people in the fight.

Today, my organization is committed to changing the way America sees and responds to human trafficking. We’re helping people and their churches and organizations find their lane, and we’re equipping survivors to find a seat at the table in almost every community in the U.S. Nearly 800 survivors are being mentored toward life after escape.

It’s about helping others use their voice to lead a movement.

I used to think God could never use me, that I’d never find my place, my calling, be mentored or have a tribe. But today, because of Him and because of communities like the men and women who are a part of the Global Leadership Network, I learned that Jesus loves girls like me.

I get to write books and speak, see women get their first job and find their lane. Now I serve on the National Advisory Council to Congress, the Department of Justice and many other boards as an advisor to the nation’s leading nonprofits. I get to help people see that it’s not just about being a voice for the voiceless, it’s about helping others use their voice to lead a movement.

You have an opportunity to be a part of more stories like mine.

Since 2013, the Summit has been brought into prisons across the U.S., this year serving 9,000+ incarcerated men and women. This year, with a desire to expand their ministry efforts in the U.S. to serve more vulnerable communities, the Global Leadership Network took on a new initiative.

I learned that Jesus loves girls like me.

Because of the generosity of this incredible community, for the first time in 2020 the Summit was offered to trafficking survivors, homeless shelters, transition homes, at risk youth and crisis centers—free of charge. This means men and women who would otherwise not have an opportunity to access leadership training at the level the Summit provides, were able to take part in the 2020 Global Leadership Summit for the first time. For many, it was also the first time they realized that they too have influence—and that they are worth something of great value.

As the Global Leadership Network seeks to expand these ministry efforts to bring the Summit to more leaders across the U.S., you have an opportunity to join them!

Will you become part of the unfolding story to reach a million people with world-class leadership development tools and encouragement? Your gift of any size makes all the difference. Every penny matters. Donate Today >>

Thank you again for being part of my story. And thank you for considering your year-end gift to help more leaders like me experience the Summit in the coming year.

Embrace the Dip Before the Surge

Stressed CEO talks to client on phone while trying to proritize next steps in the project.

What good things are you currently doing that could be preventing you from doing great things?

Every leader and every team rely on a certain number of key initiatives, strategies and “best practices” that fuel important results. But effective leaders also know some of these very strategies may be the stumbling blocks preventing you and your team from optimizing future success.

At some point, best practices can easily and subtly become anchors to growth and momentum. And if you’re not aware of this shift, you can miss new opportunities.

Several years ago, while helping to lead a nonprofit organization in Canada, a team member pointed out a concerning trend. A handful of key training events we presented each year seemed to be running out of steam. They still produced solid results, but there were indicators that they had reached their expiration date.

We had an opportunity to take on a new event, but it was unproven in Canada. In the long run, it could have had great impact. But in the short term it would likely be a struggle.

It’s the vision to see beyond the short-term dip in order to experience the long-term surge.

The new event we were considering? It was The Global Leadership Summit (GLS).

The event was just emerging on the international scene and we weren’t quite sure if it would find solid footing in Canada.

Our organization took the plunge and committed to a long-term success despite the possibility of a short-term struggle.

Craig Groeschel calls this “leading through the dip.”

Leading through the dip is the courage to endure a season of struggle, hardship or uncertainty, knowing it can lead to renewed momentum, impact and growth.

It’s the fortitude to be willing to see familiar strategies wind down so emerging innovations can produce new opportunities.

It’s the vision to see beyond the short-term dip in order to experience the long-term surge.

Every team and every leader will, at some point, face a “leading through the dip” moment; that decisive turning point when you must recognize that it may be time to set aside the familiar, and even the successful, in order to embrace new opportunities.

To navigate such moments, ask yourself these questions:
  1. What strategies are starting to feel just a bit stale?
  2. What new opportunities could represent a new, bold future?
  3. How willing are you to lead through a season of uncertainty, or even decline, in order to fulfill that future?

Here’s the reality for leaders. Growth is rarely a straight, uninterrupted line “up and to the right”.

Growth, progress and momentum often begins with a season of decline before that growth kicks in.

Growth, progress and momentum often begins with a season of decline before that growth kicks in.

So, hold your present strategies loosely, and be willing to shift towards bold, new, even untested opportunities as they arise.

Just be prepared to lead through the dip before you experience the surge.

Remember the Incarcerated this #GivingTuesday

Prison Program Marquee

If you’ve been to The Global Leadership Summit before, then you already know how powerful it can be to receive leadership insights and encouragement to push forward and continue to bring hope and positive transformation within your sphere of influence, especially in a year like this.

For the 9,000+ incarcerated men and women who watched the Summit from prison this year, the impact is already having a ripple effect. We’ve already received dozens of letters from men and women across the country, and the message is clear—the Summit made them feel valued.

Watch what happened when James experienced the Summit in prison.

When you give toward this initiative, you ignite transformation in the lives of the incarcerated, their families lives and their communities.

What if we could expand the Summit into 100+ prisons in 2021?! Will you help us get there?

This year, gifts given to the Global Leadership Network on #GivingTuesday  will go toward funding the expansion of the Summit in prisons, and also supply prisons with leadership resources to help incarcerated men and women grow throughout the year.

  • $250 will supply one prison with a GLS20 faculty book library
  • $500 will help cover print supplies for a prison audience
  • $2,500 will bring the Summit to a new prison in 2021
