Why Success Leads to Outcome Bias

Rasmus Ankersen describes why successful organizations are susceptible to outcome bias and coaches leaders on how to overcome it.

Questions to Ask in Times of Success

Rasmus Ankersen lists the kinds of questions leaders should ask to understand reasons behind organizational performance.

Deepen

In the clips, Rasmus described how successful organizations can be susceptible to outcome bias. Reflect in your journal, using the questions below.

1. Think back on work or ministry projects with which you have been involved in the past. Can you identify times where outcome bias may have been operating?

2. What happens when organizations make future decisions based on outcome bias?

3. What would it look like if an organization treated success with the same skepticism as failure?

Do

Think about the area of the organization for which you are responsible. Try looking at your team from the outside-in to check your outcome bias using the questions that Rasmus suggested.

  • Are we actually that successful?
  • What’s the cause of our success?
  • How big of a factor was luck in our success?
  • If we were the most critical skeptic, what questions would we ask ourselves?
  • If we were our strongest competitor, how would we beat ourselves?
